A group of 5 Leonardo students from
Murcia
, in
Spain
, arrived in the college yesterday. They were
greeted by the Leonardo Team, lead by Orla
O'Riordan. Their accompanying teacher, Mr Juan
Dorda, visited our Principal, Mr. Gerry O'Dwyer.
Students from the Cork College of Commerce who will,
in turn, be visiting
Murcia
in February 2008, came to meet the students also and
will act as support for the Spanish students while
they are in
Cork
. A visit to the Lord Mayor, later in the morning,
was greatly appreciated by the students. Students
will stay in
Cork
for approx 4 weeks. They will stay with Host
Families in Grange and will work in local business
organisations like RCI in
Mahon
, Hotels such as Hayfield Manor and Metropole, Cork
Vision Centre, Starwood Call Centre, etc.
10.11.07: The
Leonardo X-Factor
It wasn't auditions but interviews for sending
our students to the continent on the Leonardo
Programme! It wasn't Simon Cowell, Louis and Sharon
either but Orla, Afra, Jane and Pauline from the
Leonardo Team. But the process was similar - lots
and lots of hopefuls and only so many chosen. We had
a fantastic response - which was great. But it also
meant an awful lot of work trying to fit in all
these interviews in a short space of time. We were
absolutely spoiled for choice in some areas - like
Beauty Therapy, Montessori and Child Care with many
exceptional students to choose from. Eventually we
went back to all relevant teachers and asked them to
grade prospective students, taking into account,
suitability, past performance in regard to
attendance, adhering to deadlines, etc. The choices
are now made, language classes have begun and
students will travel in late January and early
February. Click here for a list of successful
students.No sooner have the holidays
ended when the Leonardo da Vinci Programme roars
into action. Within the next two weeks, we
have 16 Italian students, together with 2 teachers,
coming here to work in Cork. The week after,
we have a group of Teachers from Finland visiting
our college and these teachers will also work in
Cork companies.

Programme
The Italian students come from
diverse backgrounds and will work in a wide variety
of areas. Maria Hurley, the College Placement
Officer, does marathon work finding placements for
all the Leonardo students. Some will work in
companies like Apple, The Blood Transfusion Service,
etc. The students will all stay with host families
– mostly in the Douglas area while their teachers
have opted to stay in a city-centre apartment.
We are all looking forward to
meeting our Italian and Finnish visitors. So if you
see some of them around the college in the next few
weeks, please give them a warm College of Commerce
welcome.
Our Leo Team this year is Orla
O’Riordan who is Programme Manager, Jane
Fitzpatrick, Afra Murphy and Ian Spillane.
